A repeater in amateur radio serves the primary function of extending the range of communication by retransmitting signals. It achieves this by receiving a weak or low-level signal from a transceiver, amplifying it, and then sending it out at a higher power level, often using a different frequency. This capability allows amateur radio operators to communicate over much greater distances than would be possible with a direct line-of-sight contact, especially in areas where terrain or other obstacles may impede radio waves.

The ability to retransmit signals is particularly beneficial in scenarios where operators are located far apart or when the radio waves would not otherwise reach the intended recipient. This is why repeaters are strategically placed at high elevations and in locations that provide greater coverage.

While enhancing audio quality and providing emergency communication are valuable functions in their own rights, they are not the main purpose of a repeater. Instead, the core function remains the expansion of communication range for better connectivity between amateur radio operators.
